Description
The novel "Penelope" (2005) is a female version of one of the monuments of ancient literature, "The Odyssey", an unexpected retelling of the Homeric epic from the perspective of Penelope, who awaits the return of her husband, who has been away for twenty years after marrying Odysseus. What is insignificant and secondary in "The Odyssey" is given importance and foregrounded in "Penelope", especially the execution of twelve maidservants, who are sentenced to death for having sex with the suitors who have pursued Odysseus's wife during his absence. The group of maidservants here act as dancers in ancient Greek tragedy. "Penelope" is a postmodern work with a tragicomic spirit and a combination of prose and verse. Atwood is completely different and new in emphasis presented the ancient story of the "Odyssey".
