Description
The novel The Family of Pascual Duarte (1942) tells the story of a peasant named Pascual who, before his execution, writes down the story of his life, which from beginning to end is a painful and terrible confession of his own mistakes and the bloody existence he was forced to lead. Is man born evil or does society make him so? This is the only question Pascual asks the reader: who is he in the end, a victim or a murderer? Many literary critics believe that this novel is an allegorical depiction of the problems that divide Spain from within, and therefore Camilo José Cela, through the family of Pascual Duarte, reveals and criticizes the corrupt Spain of the post-war years.
