Description
This masterpiece by the renowned Guatemalan writer, Nobel Prize winner and pioneer of “magic realism” Miguel Ángel Asturias (1899-1974), published in 1946, is not only one of the most important Latin American dictator novels, but also one of the most important works in all of world literature. The author describes an anonymous but real dictator from an unknown country and creates his own story by describing only some of his inhumane and cruel acts and showing how they can destroy the lives of individuals and affect entire societies. The novel has a real basis: the author witnessed how one of the political opponents of his country’s dictatorial president was tortured to death, convinced of his wife’s infidelity.
