In the United States during the Civil War, five Northerners escape from the besieged southern capital of Richmond in a hot air balloon. In March 1865, a terrible storm throws them onto an uninhabited island in the Southern Hemisphere. Each of the new inhabitants of the island has an indispensable talent, and under the leadership of engineer Cyrus Smith, these brave people unite and become a single team. At first, using simple improvised means, and then, producing increasingly complex tools and household tools in their own small factories, the settlers regulate their ordinary life. Soon, thanks to their hard work and knowledge, the colonists no longer experienced a lack of food, clothing, warmth and comfort.
