Adel Kamel's The Great Con Man of Cairo knows no time or boundaries. Kamel writes about Cairo in the 1930s, where young heroes Khaled and Malim try to find their way in a chaotic world. Khaled, the son of the cruel and wealthy Ahmed Pasha Khorshed, does not become the man his father dreamed of after completing his studies abroad. Malim, the son of a crazy street perfume seller, dreams of turning over a new leaf in his life and earning a decent living by getting a good job. It seems that Khaled and Malim's paths will never cross, but in Kamel's Egypt, no one creates their own destiny, and an invisible chain of chance irrevocably changes the lives of Khaled and Malim. Kamel writes ironically about the decisions his heroes make, raising questions of status, education, the conflict between fathers and sons, the limitations of society and prejudice. The work, spiced with satire, is full of tragedy, vivid characters and subtle humor.
