The book "Emma" by Jane Austen

Emma Woodhouse, "refined, clever, and rich," at the age of twenty-one, decides that marriage is not for her, that she must remain forever with her aged father, and devote her sagacity, energy, and all her powers to the cause of uniting the destinies of the young people of her immediate circle. The good intentions, honesty, and high intellectual abilities of the amiable mistress of Hartfield Manor are beyond doubt, but the impartial reader, who generally admires her character, will more than once be filled with anger at her for her reckless actions. Fortunately, Emma had a wise friend from childhood, who was always able to notice and point out her mistakes, and direct her on the right path. And it is this old friend who is destined ultimately to break her resolution never to marry.
